Delgado Community College and Our Lady of the Lake College (OLOL College) in Baton Rouge announce the completion of a formal articulation agreement. The agreement allows Delgado graduates with an Associate of Science degree in Nursing (ASN) to enroll seamlessly into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at OLOL College.
Delgado Community College Interim Chancellor Deborah R. Lea and OLOL College President Sandra S. Harper, Ph.D., signed the agreement in a January 13 ceremony at Our Lady of the Lake College. Also representing Delgado at the ceremony were Cheryl Myers, Ph.D., R.N., Dean of the Charity School of Nursing, and Harold Gaspard, Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Articulation is a term describing the transition of a student from one educational institution to another, or from one level of education to the next, with minimum duplication of coursework. The articulation agreement between Delgado and OLOL College guarantees Delgado’s ASN graduates acceptance into OLOL College’s baccalaureate programs.
Jim Purcell, Ed.D., Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education, who oversees the Louisiana State Board of Regents and represents the state’s post-secondary education community, attended the ceremony. Noting that Delgado is a public institution while OLOL College is private, Dr. Purcell said: “This articulation agreement provides an outstanding example of a public-private partnership which both helps students to succeed and builds workforce opportunities here in Louisiana.”
Interim Chancellor Lea of Delgado also noted the agreement’s significance. “It is important that the path to higher education that starts at Delgado continues for many of our students at four-year institutions around the state,” she said. “We are pleased to be able to offer our students this valuable opportunity. Both Delgado and Our Lady of the Lake College are recognized for excellence in nursing and health sciences education. This agreement helps ensure that the residents of our state receive high-quality health care, and that nursing students at our two colleges enjoy the benefits of a top-quality education.”
President Harper of OLOL College further emphasized the importance of the agreement. “It has always been our priority to offer greater educational resources for the community and the state of Louisiana,” she said. “This partnership with Delgado greatly expands nursing education and the important competencies needed in the complex health care environment of the 21st century.”
