Charity School of Nursing Students Awarded Fellowships and Scholarships

Charity School of Nursing at Delgado Community College announces a partnership with Tulane University School of Medicine that enables Delgado nursing students to participate in fellowships at community health centers operated by Tulane.

Delgado nursing students participating in the fellowship program during the Spring 2012 semester are Bryan Camus and Joanna Niyazov.

Tulane University Community Health Centers help provide primary care to low-income members of the community and hands-on experience for physicians, nurses and others who are training to work in healthcare careers. The nine centers provide approximately 2,000 patient visits per month. Most of the adult patients are overweight or obese, and the majority manages some chronic disease.

Additionally, Delgado nursing student Brian Fazekas has received a highly competitive scholarship from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Fazekas is one of about 350 recipients selected from more than 11,000 applicants from around the country.

In exchange for at least two years of service at a healthcare facility with a critical shortage of nurses, the scholarship Fazekas is receiving pays tuition, fees and other educational expenses while providing a monthly stipend for living expenses.

“This scholarship is quite an honor for both Brian and for Charity School of Nursing,” said Dr. Cheryl Myers, Dean of Charity School of Nursing at Delgado. “We applaud his achievement as a nursing student and we look forward to seeing him begin an outstanding career in healthcare.”
