Delgado baseball team gets high honors from the State of Louisiana

The 2012 Delgado Dolphins baseball team was honored yesterday, May 30, in the State Capitol at Baton Rouge. The team members were invited into the House chambers by the New Orleans delegation, where they were lauded by members of the Legislature.

The team presented each member of the New Orleans delegation with autographed baseballs.

Head Coach Joe Scheuermann and Interim Chancellor Debbie Lea were interviewed at the event by WGNO TV, channel 26, which reported the Delgado Dolphins honor on its news broadcast. The video can be viewed online at http://www.abc26.com/sports/local/ (this URL is subject to change).

Earlier this month, the Dolphins (30-20) won their sixth Region 23 title in the last seven seasons. The Region 23 tournament was held at Skaggs Field on the Meridian (Miss.) Community College campus.

Four Dolphins were selected to the All-Region 23 team. The four players are sophomore CF Sean McMullen, LF Logan Jones, 3B Daniel Brockhoeft and freshman pitcher Pierce Liberta. These four players plus freshman SS Tony Fortier-Bensen were selected as all-Mississippi-Louisiana Conference players.

Head Coach Joe Scheuermann — in his 22nd season — has won over 700 games with the Dolphins. Scheuermann was named the Region 23 Coach of the Year in 2012.

Delgado at 90: Nine Decades of Growth, Change and Progress

In 1921, a Delgado faculty member could buy a loaf of bread for six cents, or a seven-bedroom house for $6,500. After 90 years, things have changed. A member of the first faculty of the Isaac Delgado Central Trades School could not have imagined that, nine decades later, a fully accredited college enrolling more than 20,000 would have grown around 615 City Park Avenue and expanded into other neighborhoods across the city, river and lake.

Delgado’s 90th Anniversary blog presents an ongoing series of stories about the history of Delgado, beginning before its opening in 1921 and continuing through the present day.

Events, issues and people from Delgado’s past and present are spotlighted along with reflections on New Orleans and national history and culture during the past 90 years. Archival pictures illustrate each story.

Delgado at 90: The Tool Kit is Filled with News and Views from a Bygone Era

In June 1922, a visitor to the brand-new Isaac Delgado Central Trades School spotted a machine shop student hammering away on a block of metal while whistling the “Wang-Wang Blues” to keep time.

In July 1923, Miss Elleonora Moss — friend and confidante of school founder Isaac Delgado — donated two crape myrtle trees to brighten the driveway entrance to the campus. Other donors provided roses, oleander and azalea plants to cover the bare lawn surrounding the building known today as Building 1, or Isaac Delgado Hall.

How do we know these facts about the earliest years of Delgado Community College? Because they are in the Tool Kit.

The Tool Kit was a newsletter written, published and printed by Delgado students and faculty members starting in 1921. During its 1922-1927 heyday, the Tool Kit provided a regular source of news, educational program promotion — and humor. Lots of humor.

To read a newly created online archive of existing copies of the Tool Kit, go to http://www.dcc.edu/delgado90/archives/index.html.

Additionally, the latest post on the Delgado 90th Anniversary blog provides the history of the Tool Kit and a selection of choice articles and images from its pages over the years. See it and other recent stories about Delgado’s 90 years of service at http://delgado90.blogspot.com/.

Graduates work in doctors’ private practices as well as at local medical centers including LSU, Ochsner and Tulane. Their duties and responsibilities vary widely.

Delgado at 90: Slidell and Covington locations serve students in thriving communities

Delgado Community College currently serves over 3,500 students in credit courses at the Covington and Slidell locations. Course offerings range from developmental to general education to full programs of study. In a 2009 economic impact study conducted by GCR & Associates, Delgado’s Northshore locations had the following economic impact:

•    a total economic impact on the greater metro economy of $58,149,251, much of it within St. Tammany Parish;
•    1,016 of the 75,117 jobs in St. Tammany filled by Delgado graduates from the previous five years;
•    graduates as a group earn over $12 million more per year than they would have without their Delgado education.

Delgado faculty member and two Charity graduates named 2012 Health Care Heroes by New Orleans CityBusiness

A Delgado Community College faculty member and two graduates of Charity School of Nursing have been named 2012 Health Care Heroes by the publication New Orleans CityBusiness.

There are 51 people recognized among the group, which includes six professional areas: animal care, first responders, nurses, physicians, professionals and volunteers. “They are the heartbeat of the region’s medical industry,” said Christian Moises, news editor of CityBusiness.

Linda Kelly, L.O.T.R., M.A., Ph.D., professor of Occupational Therapy, has taught at Delgado since 1995.

“In occupational therapy, what we are trying to do is get people back into what is called the skills for the job of living,” Kelly told a CityBusiness reporter for the publication’s May 18 edition.  “We are trying to help return people to the kind of life where they can be functional in whatever it is they like to do and whatever is meaningful to them.”

Approximately 20 students enroll in the occupational therapy program at Delgado each semester. Kelly’s students have assisted residents at nonprofit organizations around the region, including Project Lazarus, Kingsley House and Magnolia School.

Charlotte Parent, R.N., B.S.N., is director of health for the City of New Orleans. The Charity Hospital School of Nursing graduate was a labor and delivery nurse and maternal child services director at Touro Infirmary before joining city government.

Janet Parrish, R.N., B.S., is a nurse with Addiction Recovery Resources Inc. of Metairie. The Charity Hospital School of Nursing graduate works with inpatient and outpatient clients to assess and improve their behavioral health.

Professor Terri Gonzales-Kreisman is 2012 Seymour Weiss Excellence in Teaching Award Winner

Delgado Community College is proud to announce that Terri Gonzales-Kreisman, professor of business and technology and coordinator of the Legal Secretary Certificate program, is the 2012 recipient of the annual Seymour Weiss Endowed Professorship for Excellence in Teaching Award, the highest honor the college bestows upon its faculty. The award was presented at Delgado’s Spring 2012 Commencement exercises at the Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena on May 21.

Professor Terri Gonzales-Kreisman, “Miss G”

“I feel like one daisy among all the daisies,” she said, noting that her colleagues nominated for the award this year are all outstanding educators. This year was Gonzales-Kreisman’s eighth as a nominee.

She is using the monetary part of the award to participate in this year’s National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) teaching and leadership conference, held annually in Austin, TX.

Gonzales-Kreisman has taught at Delgado since 1985, coordinating the Legal Secretary Certificate program and teaching a variety of courses including economics, management, business communication and marketing. In addition to her departmental contributions, she has been a volunteer worker in the Registrar’s Office, a moderator of the Enrollment Services Internet chat room, a developmental English instructor, an Occupational Therapy Assistant program presenter and a member of the Commencement and Professional Development committees. She received the Chancellor’s Innovator of the Year award for volunteer services in 2008.

The Metairie resident is a volunteer at East Jefferson General Hospital. She has given presentations at Lusher Elementary School in New Orleans, McNeese State University Summer Economics Institute, the NISOD teaching and leadership conference in Austin, TX – as well as at Delgado’s Women in Search of Excellence (W.I.S.E.) seminars. She has participated in the Irma Thomas Community Outreach Project at Delgado since 2009.

Professional memberships include Louisiana Legal Secretaries Inc., Legal Secretaries of New Orleans and the River Region and the American Federation of Teachers. She is a past president of Pi Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma international honor society for women educators,

Gonzales-Kreisman holds a Master of Education degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of New Orleans and has State of Louisiana certification in educational evaluation. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business education at the University of Southwestern Louisiana.

Known for wearing pink clothing when she gives a test, “Miss G” – her students’ nickname for her – points to the Italian heritage that is obscured by her hyphenated last name. “I love pink and I love purple,” she said.

Students’ recommendations are part of the selection process for the Weiss Award. Her selection for the award included dozens of highly complimentary reviews by current and former Delgado students. “When students stop to hug you at Commencement, it means everything,” she said, adding that receiving notes from them later means a lot to her, too.

“More special than the wonderful feeling of being honored for doing something I love is when I hear from students that I made a difference. That’s the real honor and reward,” she said.

Other 2012 Seymour Weiss Endowed Professorship for Excellence in Teaching Award nominees were: Ty A. Delger, Allied Health; Marilyn Ciolino, Business and Technology; Rene Randall, Allied Health; Janet S. Colletti, Westbank Campus; Wendy Garretson, Charity School of Nursing; Raymond R. Duplessis Jr., Science and Math; Abdelrahim Ayyad, Northshore; Miguel Romar-Manuel, Westbank Campus; William R. Traylor, Technical Division; Kim Uddo, Charity School of Nursing; Barbara Thomas, Arts and Humanities; Tedd M. Walley, Arts and Humanities.

About the Seymour Weiss Excellence in Teaching Award

The Seymour Weiss Excellence in Teaching Award is Delgado Community College’s most prestigious award presented to a faculty member. The recipient receives a gold lapel pin, an embossed plaque, a certificate of excellence and a monetary award. The faculty member’s monetary award is funded through a permanent endowed trust fund, the Delgado Community College Seymour Weiss Endowed Professorship. This endowment is made possible through the Board of Regents’ Louisiana Education Quality Support Fund (LEQSF) program and is jointly funded by the LEQSF and the Delgado Community College Foundation Seymour Weiss Trust Fund. In addition, all Excellence in Teaching nominees have first preference for funding to attend the current year’s National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Conference.
